Goldenberry, Inca Berry, Cape Gooseberry or Physalis peruviana is a glorious little morsel. Relatively new on the health scene, it has been a South American favourite for centuries.
Until you’ve tasted it, the flavour is hard to describe - but we’ll try. Think sweet and sour, with shades of grape, cherry tomato and strawberry all in one. The fruits develop in a semi-transparent ‘lantern’, turning from green to a deep golden yellow.
The bold and lip-smacking taste gives some hint as to its super high nutrition value, including:
Exceptionally high vitamin C
Vitamin E, K and some B vitamins
Protective compounds such as withanolides, linoleic acid and palmitic acid
In sum, if you want an immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-regulating, anti-ageing and organ-protective snack, goldenberries are where it’s at.
Delicious straight out of the bag, add them to muesli, yoghurt, trail mix, lunch box snacks, jam, fruit cakes and baking or even chocolate.
